Chapter Twenty-One

Then

Tommy and John

“Did you hear about Troy Badgerton?”

Tommy finishes off his first beer and tosses the bottle to the side of the bench he and John share. It’s hidden behind a makeshift forest wall with a long view hole watching for deer. “Why would I give a fuck about Troy Badgerton,” he huffs, then sniffs in the cold winter air. “He’s a piece of shit.”

John lifts his half empty bottle and takes a quick swig before answering, “He was admitted to the hospital with a cut Achilles tendon. Someone sliced the fuck out of it.”

“No shit?”

“Dawn says it happened at work. Some guy went apeshit on him, sliced the back of his ankle right open.”

Tommy’s face contorts into confusion, “Who would do that? Isn’t that asshole untouchable around here?”

“With his dad being the only guy you can get to not rip you off? Yeah. So, I couldn’t tell ya who would do it. It couldn’t be anyone from around here. But I gotta tell ya Tommy, rumour has it he attacked Hannah right before it happened.”

“Hannah?!” Tommy’s head spins back to John and his voice almost cracks, “Attacked Hannah?!”

“Don’t get your balls in an uproar - that’s just the rumour. Troy isn’t admitting to anything. From what I hear, he hasn’t said a word. Whatever happened scared him shitless. I doubt anyone could get it out of him.”

“Attacked how?” Tommy presses, but John is over it.

“I don’t know, man. It’s just what I heard. Dawn was workin’ at the hospital at the time and overheard Luc talkin’ about some guy they saw. Hannah didn’t tell you something happened?”

Instantly, Tommy feels guilty. Not only did she not tell him, but their lack of communication since the other morning together has been growing. “Yeah, probably.” He feels a pit in his stomach, especially since he made promises to her they both know are empty. He thinks long and hard about being there for her more, but it’s almost impossible so long as Molly is around. If the rumours are true - which they usually are, Troy got what he deserved, and someone else must be looking out for Hannah. The thought makes Tommy smirk.

Suddenly, his mind ploughs into overdrive at the recollection of Hannah mentioning a man following her.

He turns on the bench and pops open the cooler behind them, taking another beer bottle from it and turning the cap before drinking again.

“You seen anyone new around here lately?”

John sighs before turning to his side inquisitively, “New?” He shakes his head slowly, “No one I can think of. At least no one I’ve seen. Have you?”

Tommy downplays the thought of what Hannah had claimed. Overall, it might raise suspicion and Hannah doesn’t need more of that, “Hannah said she thought she saw someone outside her house. She said she didn’t think they wanted to hurt her though. Make any sense to you?”

John’s eyebrows raise. He doesn’t look like he has anything to say in return.

Tommy contemplates the possibility of mentioning it raising possible further suspicion and plays it down.
